A new year, and brunch to go with it.

I didn't make resolutions this year, because I've decided to go a little easier on myself in 2014. A resolution in itself, I suppose. We're pretty set in our ways over here, and I can be fairly cruel to myself when I don't live up to even the silliest of expectations. Discipline is a wonderful, important thing, but there's a big difference between discipline and slavery to an ever-changing idea of perfection. One breeds growth and fosters a balance between what we want and what we need. The other is ugly, unnecessary and has a low return on investment in the long run. So I'm saying "yes" to discipline this year, while opening up more room for creativity, thinking outside the box, spontaneity. Life is too short, I'm afraid. Just something I'm thinking about on this chilly January day.

We had a little New Year brunch this morning, complete with mimosas (leftover champagne for the win) and waffles made in an inherited waffle maker. We also moved our old couch down to the street to make room for the new. I didn't have high hopes for the couch-moving experience as a whole, but we managed to squeeze Old Green down three flights of stairs without breaking any bones or walls. It's a New Year miracle!

And here we are, 2014. You're all bright and sparkly in your fantastic possibility, and I can't wait to get to know you better.
