Dear baby boy.

Yesterday was my first day back at the office. It felt bigger than I had anticipated, and my voice caught in the back of my throat as I drove to the train, like inhaling water when diving into a pool. You'll be spending lots of time in the loving and capable hands of your grandmothers while I work from the office and from home - the best thing for you and for me, and such a great opportunity for you to get to know the beautiful women who rocked your mama and daddy to sleep.

I firmly believe in the importance of mothers dedicating themselves to the things that light a fire within them, inside and outside of the home. I hope you see that there are endeavors worth pursuing, even when (especially when) your heart is more comfortable in a tucked away place. That this family will protect you fiercely, but will release you to chase your dreams and make your mistakes.

A good life takes balance, it's true. I hope yours is filled with people you love, crazy adventures, hard work, passion, purpose and a place to lay your head at the end of the day. Whatever good thing you choose to do with your life, dive into it, little one. Don't fear the moments that take your breath away.

I love you, always.
